If you own an older home like I do, you probably know the feeling of staring at something that looks like it’s been there since before the house itself was built. For me, that thing was my porch light. Honestly, I’m convinced the house, built in 1965, was designed around it. The fixture was ancient, ugly, and barely functional. After years of complaints (mostly from myself), I finally decided it was time for an upgrade.
I had two main criteria:
- Motion Detection – Something that would turn on automatically when my girlfriend gets home late, but wouldn’t stay on constantly and attract every bug in the neighborhood.
- Convenient Power Outlets – A fixture that included outlets so I wouldn’t have to drag extension cords through the house or around the yard during projects.
After some searching, I landed on the Slypadan Motion Sensor Porch Light with GFCI Outlets paired with the DAYBETTER LED Edison Bulbs. Here’s how it went down:
Why I Chose the Slypadan Porch Light
At first glance, the Slypadan Porch Light checked all my boxes. It’s got built-in GFCI outlets (two of them!), perfect for holiday lights, power tools, or anything else I might need to plug in outside. Plus, it has three customizable lighting modes: always-on dusk-to-dawn, motion sensor only, and a combination mode that stays dim but brightens with motion. I personally opted for the pure motion-sensing “Auto Mode,” ensuring the light comes on only when necessary—no unnecessary bug invasions at night.
Installation was surprisingly easy, even for someone who’s not exactly an electrician. The box includes almost everything needed—I only had to grab wire cutters, pliers, and a tube of caulk from my garage. Within an hour, I went from having a porch fixture older than the moon landing to a modern security light.
The Good, The Bad, and The…Sensitive?
The good stuff:
- The motion detection is spot-on once adjusted, making late-night arrivals safer for my girlfriend (and less anxiety-inducing for me).
- Built-in GFCI outlets are a game-changer for convenience—no more tangled extension cords!
- Solid aluminum design is supposed to withstand weather conditions well. (Fingers crossed!)
The bad stuff:
- Out of the box, the motion detection was way too sensitive, lighting up every time a car passed by. I had to fine-tune it quite a bit.
- The black coating on the metal parts could be more durable. One of the nuts lost its coating almost immediately during installation, which makes me wonder about its longevity but it’s held up so far!
Adding a Warm, Vintage Glow with DAYBETTER Edison Bulbs
To complete the porch upgrade, I paired the fixture with the DAYBETTER Vintage LED Edison Bulbs. I won’t lie—I’m a sucker for the Edison bulb aesthetic. They offer a warm white glow (2700K), giving a cozy vibe without sacrificing brightness. Plus, these bulbs are energy-efficient, providing brightness equal to traditional 60W bulbs but using far less power. DAYBETTER claims they’ll last around 15,000 hours—which basically means I can ignore bulb changes for years (thank goodness).
Installation was as easy as screwing in a bulb (literally). And, bonus points: no flicker, no buzzing, just reliable lighting with a nice vintage flair.
Was It Worth It?
In short—absolutely. Despite a couple of minor hiccups with sensitivity and durability, this porch light setup feels like a massive upgrade from the prehistoric lantern that haunted my doorway for decades. The added convenience of built-in outlets, combined with the smart functionality and aesthetic of the Edison bulbs, makes it one of my favorite home improvement projects to date.
