I Finally Got a Drone—And Then Immediately Crashed It

I caved. The drone hype got to me. I live near the water and thought, “How cool would it be to get some sweeping aerial shots of the bay?” So I picked up the Holy Stone HS720, charged it up, and prepared to become a drone pilot.

Unfortunately, I made the brilliant decision to do this right before cold weather hit. Nothing says “great drone flying conditions” like numb fingers and frozen airspace, right?

So I shelved it. But now that spring has arrived, I finally busted it out—and wow. First of all: I’m really bad at this.

A Backyard Obstacle Course (That It Survived)

There’s officially nothing in my backyard I haven’t hit with this drone. The garage? Hit it. The house? Yup. The tree line? Multiple times. My ego? Crushed.

But here’s the wild part: the Holy Stone HS720 is a tank. Despite some “custom weathering” (aka scrapes and dings), it still flies great. No replacement blades yet, no weird drift, no sad spiral into the bushes.

That kind of durability, especially at this price point, deserves a shoutout.

What’s in the Box? (Spoiler: A Lot)

Right now, the HS720 is 20% off with Amazon’s Big Spring Deal, and it comes with everything you need to get flying:

  • ✅ The drone itself (foldable, compact, and mean-looking in a good way)
  • ✅ Two batteries for a total of 52 minutes of flight time
  • ✅ Extra blades
  • ✅ Charger
  • ✅ Remote controller with display
  • ✅ Carrying case that doesn’t feel cheap

This is a seriously solid starter kit.

Camera + Features Breakdown

Here’s what makes the HS720 more than just a flying toy:

  • 4K UHD Camera with image stabilization = actually usable footage
  • 90° Adjustable Lens lets you shoot from different perspectives
  • GPS-Assisted Flight for automatic return-to-home and follow-me features
  • Smart Modes like waypoint flying, orbit mode, and auto return
  • Optical Flow Positioning helps when GPS signal is weak
  • Brushless Motors = quieter, longer-lasting, and more efficient
  • 3000-foot control range – that’s over half a mile!

This drone practically flies itself—except for when I’m behind the controller, in which case it’s flying into itself.

The Controller: Nerdy But Awesome

You get real-time info on battery levels, GPS signal, and more, right from the controller’s LED screen. There’s even a button just to turn the drone lights on or off, which is a neat touch if you’re flying in lower light conditions.

Bonus points for lefties—you can switch the throttle to the right stick. Just don’t forget to peel the scratch-proof film off the camera and controller (rookie mistake… made that one already).

Final Thoughts: Worth It?

If you’re new to drones and want something durable, affordable, and feature-rich, this is the one to beat. I’m still learning (aka crashing), but the Holy Stone HS720 has held up to everything I’ve thrown at it… or flown it into.

It’s reliable, forgiving, and surprisingly high quality for a sub-$300 quadcopter. And right now, with the 20% off deal, it’s kind of a no-brainer.
